Introductions- Kelsey Samuels

1. What has been your favorite course of study in or out of school? Why?
My favorite course of study has definitely been my third term senior year, senior project. I was able to choose what kind of project I would work on for the last three months of high school. I chose to write a screenplay. It extended my interest toward film studies.

2. How many pages was the longest paper you have written? Did it include endnotes and bibliography?
The longest paper I wrote was my screenplay which was 102 pages total, not including an artist statement and the bibliography page.

3. Which was your favorite paper? Please tell us about the topic in a couple of sentences.
My favorite paper was my college essay. It was the detailed experience of the months after Hurricane Katrina in the psychological sense. I wrote about the 5 stages of loss as it pertained to me: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

4. Is there a particular kind of writing you love to do?
I love creative writing! It is definitely my favorite type. Writing a screenplay was a new experience for me. I loved creating the entire story without any (very little) limitations. I liked being able to start something from scratch.

5. Which books have you read lately: art, fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi, poetry, environmental, film? Any comments are welcome.
I have recently read The Help. I really enjoyed it because of the stories I had heard of the south from my parents. I could then relate to what I read in the book. It is interesting to see the changes from back then in the 1960s to the present.

6. Which artist or writer really impresses you? Why?
I absolutely love Ernest Hemingway. I like novels that have deeper meanings. Hemingway's tone is so prominent in all of his work. His simple style and the illustrations of grace under pressure define what I want to convey in my writing.

7. What is your main interest besides writing, art, music, (i.e., the humanities)?
I would like to think that film is a form of art, but I'm not sure if it classifies as the humanities. Film studies has definitely been a main interest of mine for about five years now. I watch all of the new, upcoming trailers in my free time and read screenplays online of some of my favorite films such as Gardenstate, Away We Go, and Little Miss Sunshine.

8. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately.
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a very interesting article in the Vail Daily. It was a letter to the editor about NGOs in Haiti. I was interested in this particular article because my old school in Vail was involved in the NGO process in countries such as Nepal, Kenya, Bolivia, and even India. The article conveyed a deep insight to the different programs in different areas of Haiti and if they were actually helping or digging a deeper economic hole. It gave me motivation to talk to my teacher about setting up a program for kids of Vail Mountain School to travel to Haiti and teach children about life skills such as relationships, education, and safety.

9. Which recent cultural event has really impressed you? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event, for which there are good reasons).
Recently, I have had the privilege to go to the Getty Museum in Southern California. The art inside was amazing, but what impressed me the most was the architecture of the buildings themselves.

10. Is there another, non-cultural event that has affected you deeply.
The earthquakes in the south is an event that surprises me. I have recently heard of earthquakes in Virginia that have affected multiple families.

11. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. If possible, give a source for this idea so that those who are interested know where to go.
I think the best way to widen your horizon is to go out and do what you love to do and always try new things. For example, I have never sailed a day in my life, but I'm joining the sailing team!
